Rally for same-sex marriage rights this SAT!

November 25th, 2009 | By President

Jacob Carswell-Doherty – President

Hi all,

This Saturday the 28th of November at 1pm, Sydney Town Hall, the Year of Action on same-sex marriage rights will kick off with what will hopefully be a very exciting rally!

The rally is timed to coincide with the release of recommendations from the Govt. inquiry into same-sex marriage and so it’s of upmost importance we get a big turn out to send a strong message to Kevin Rudd that same-sex rights are civil rights and that we want equality marriage rights now!

If you believe in equal rights for all and want to see an end to discrimination then you need to come to this rally and show your support!

The ACT Govt. recently passed civil unions for same-sex couples and the Victorian Labor Party has adopted a policy of same-sex marriage rights, this is a direct result of the success of the campaing thus far and we need to keep it up!

See you there!

Same-Sex Marriage campaign is Full Steam ahead!!

October 16th, 2009 | By admin

This year, the need for equality of all is shining a very important light on pursuing equality for same-sex relationships, and the rights they deserve to Same-Sex Marriage. UWS Students have jumped onboard, and are taking part in the national rally happening on the 28th of November, 1pm, infront of Sydney’s Town Hall. As socially conscious students, empowered by our learnings here at UWS, we know about the injustice being dealt to same sex couples, and we have the power to make a statement and say we want equal rights for all!

Anyone who is interested in being part of this can become part of the UWS campaign: we meet on Tuesdays, 2pm, on Bankstown campus, in Building 1, Room G.70 (The Student Union office, opposite the UWSConnect bookstore)

Coming up next week we will be running a stall at Bankstown campus, to fundraise and give people an opportunity to sign the petition; to tell the government that we need equality.

And then the following week we will be holding a movie screening and Barbeque to once again promote this cause, and give people more of a chance to ask us questions and get involved.

If you’re interested please join our facebook group…

And here is the ideas from a similar march in Washington…

This is an important cause, so get involved! Come along to one of our meetings on Tuesday, or come along and sign the petition. We look forward to hearing from you..

Cheers,

Changes to the Bachelor of Pyschology

October 14th, 2009 | By President

Jacob Carswell-Doherty – President

A number of students have raised concerns about the proposed changes to the BPsych degree at UWS.

The main problems seem to be:

  • - The new program has NOT been accredited by the Australian Psychological Accreditation Council.
  • - Students have not been given the option to complete the program that they are currently enrolled in.
  • - The psychology elective pool has decreased by 65% for B.Psych students
  • - and more…

UWS Psych has declined a meeting with The Hive to discuss this issue and instead has indicated that there will an open meeting at some point in the future TBA.

The Hive will hold a meeting for all interested students at the Bankstown campus Monday the 19th of October at 11am to discuss the issue and work on a solution.

$1,800 to do a Summer Law subject!?

October 13th, 2009 | By President

Jacob Carswell-Doherty – President

If you, like me, wanted to study any of the following law subjects this Summer, you’re going to be in for a rude shock.

Each subject costs $1,800.00 up-front and in full, no HECS/HELP.

I for one don’t see how anyone other than students with wealthy parents are going to be able to afford this. So much for getting my degree done sooner!

What do you think about this? Shameful revenue raising by UWS Law?

Why aren’t these subjects able to be put onto HECS/HELP…they have in the past!

200635 Human Rights Law

200183 Law of Business Organisations

200184 Introduction to Business Law

200187 Taxation Law

Fully Affiliated Clubs and Societies… Seeking more!

October 8th, 2009 | By Robert Coluccio (VP Activities)

Hi,

I’m the Vice-President Activities and I have been working with various groups who wish to start a club or society.

The people who have worked hard during their spare time have most certainly paid off here are the fully affiliated clubs The Hive supports:

  • Muslim Students’ Association (MSA) Parramatta
  • Vegetarian Club (based at Hawkesbury campus)
  • Universal Change UWS (UChUWS)
  • Campus Bible Ministry (CBM)
  • UWS Baha’i Society
  • UWS Afghan Society (UWSAS)

Congratulations guys you’ve done very well and thank you for being patient with me :)

If you have been thinking about starting one here are some tips and guidelines for you to do so.

It’s very simple:

Step 1 – gather 10 members who are interested and who will be active in the group.

Step 2 – create a constitution or charter that outlines what the aims and objectives of the group are. This doesn’t need to be long, about a page or two. Things like what campus you’re at, spaces you’ll need etc.

Step 3 – draw up a budget for funding you may require from The Hive.

Step 4 – contact me at activities@thehive-studentunion.org.au and I will review the request and get back to you as soon as possible.

So if you have a group of friends who would like some space to do stuff just let me know I’ll be more than happy to help!

Same-sex marriage campaign group

September 30th, 2009 | By President

The Hive is in the process of creating a campaign group for UWS students around the issue of same-sex marriage in the lead up to the year of action for same-sex marriage rights on November 28th.

The aim of the group will be to foster support for the cause on campus and in the wider community and to build up a strong contingent for the rally for same-sex marriage rights on the 28th of November. We’re just starting out so we’re eager to get lots of ideas from you all about what we can do to make this a success.

You only have to have a keen interest in fighting for civil rights to be a part of this group!

We’ll have our first meeting within the next 14 days, but if you would like to register your interest in the group then please contact Lara (Bankstown Campus Organiser) at l.gerrand@uws.edu.au or by phone on 0432 796 495.

Staff and students at the UWS Kingswood campus strike against the university on Wednesday.
Staff and students at the UWS Kingswood campus strike against the university on Wednesday.

Staff and students from the University of Western Sydney created a picket line on Wednesday outside its Kingswood Campus to protest against the management of the university.

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) announced recently that Fair Australia ballots held for university staff had resulted in a huge vote for industrial action at UWS with 84 per cent in support.

NTEU UWS Branch President, Terry Mason, said industrial action reflected how the Union’s members were sick of huge workloads, increased casualisation and staff being ignored by management on key issues affecting education.

“Our industry has been appallingly managed for some time and the threat to our international reputation for quality education is being put at risk,” Mr Mason said.

Several UWS students missed out on classes to stand beside their teachers on the picket line, with the President of the UWS Hive Student Union, Jacob Carswell-Doherty, saying a strike was the only way forward.

“We are behind the strike 100 per cent. Not only is this the only way forward for staff, but the student union sees the strike as the best way to improve the quality of education for students at UWS,” he said.

The Hive Student Union encouraged students to show support for the strike to send a clear message to the university that “enough is enough”.

“We encouraged students not to attend classes and not to cross the picket line around the university,” Mr Carswell-Doherty said.

“This is a preliminary action by the NTEU. It is about sending a message to university administration to say they can’t continue on the way they have by lowering teaching standards and raising student fees.”

In an email sent to students prior to the strike, UWS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Strategy and Service), Rhonda Hawkins, said the University valued its staff.

“It is regrettable that the NTEU would conduct any action which would disrupt teaching and University operations,” Ms Hawkins’ email read.

“The NTEU may continue to conduct industrial action throughout the ongoing negotiations and the University will seek to continue in a business as usual manner.”

Staff to strike – Wed 16th September

September 7th, 2009 | By President

Hi all,

The staff of UWS, represented by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), have voted to take industrial action on the 16th of Sept. At this stage it looks like it will be a 24 hour work stoppage.

At the last student general meeting of The Hive a motion was passed endorsing any industrial action taken by the staff at UWS. It also said that The Hive will be closed on the 16th in solidarity with the strike.

The Hive will be encouraging students NOT to attend classes on Wed the 16th of September in support of the strike. Students will not be penalised for missing classes on this day.

Let’s be clear, this strike is as much about student learning conditions as it is about staff working conditions. Improvements to the lot of staff will be beneficial for students.

I encourage everyone to participate in the strike with the staff of UWS by dropping by the picket and handing out flyers and putting up posters related to this issue on your campus.

If you have any questions or want to help out in any way then give me a call.
